THIS PAGE IS FILLED WITH MANY HELPFUL "HOW-TO's" and "KNOW-HOW's" and "WHAT ARE's?"!
LET'S START WITH LEARNING ABOUT THE 3 DIFFERENT HOOP TUBING MATERIALS! PE, HDPE, and PP
When starting out on your hoop journey, you should begin with PE pipe, also known as Polyethylene tubing or black tubing. Most people choose to tape these hoops with all kinds of pretty tapes, but you may choose to order this "naked" as a super budget-friendly hoop. This tubing comes in 3 different sizes as follows-
. . .
1. Adult Beginner- This size is highly recommended if you are an adult or teen just starting out with hula hooping! The weight of this hoop averages to be about 1lb. 8oz., which makes it the heaviest body hoop option.
What does this mean to you? The heavier the hoop, the easier it is to keep it up and going because it moves slower around your body. The slow pace makes it easier to learn hula hooping, and to also learn tricks slowly. This size is also recommended if you are using the hula hoop for core exercise. Even if you eventually advance to using faster hoops, this hoop is always great to have around for a fun workout! This hoop is not recommended for children, because the weight can bruise them easily. (There are heavier hoops out there... weighing around 3 to 4 lbs and 1 & 1/2 to 2 inches thick! I do not make those monster bruiser hoops and my hoops are not to be confused with them!)
This tubing is stiff, so choose a hoop diameter size no less than 38" and no larger than 44".
Tubing size is 1" O.D. (outer diameter), 3/4" I.D. (inner diameter), 160 PSI
. . .
2. Adult Intermediate- This size is recommended if you are comfortable with keeping the BEGINNER hula hoop up, and you are ready to advance your moves! The weight of this hoop averages to be about 1lb. This means the hoop will rotate faster around your body than the BEGINNER hoop will. This makes it ideal for incorporating more tricks and faster moves into your routine. (It also bruises you less when you whack yourself!) This hoop can also be used for older children.
Choose a hoop diameter size within the range of 32" to 40"... any larger will be too wonky.
Tubing size is 15/16" O.D., 3/4" I.D., and 100 PSI
. . .
3. Adult Advanced (or children's)- This is the ideal size for a small child, OR an adult ADVANCED hooper! This is the lightest weighing body hoop in the PE tubing. The weight of this hoop is approx. 11oz. This is a great size for more off the body tricks and hand manipulations! It is also great for faster body hooping and fast dance routines. This size is highly recommended if you are a teen or adult who is well advanced with both hula hooping and tricks. This tubing is much stronger and durable than a toy store hula hoop.
Choose a hoop diameter size within the range of 28" to 37". Any larger and the tubing will be flimsy and wonky.
Tubing size is 3/4" O.D., 1/2" I.D., and 125 PSI
. . .
Once you've mastered all 3 stages of PE hoops, the next step up in tubing is HDPE tubing, also known as High Density Polyethylene tubing or white tubing. This tubing is a bit lighter in weight than the PE tubing and will spin faster and flows like a dream! Step up your hooping performance with more precise moves as this hoop works great in response to breaks, leg breaks, reversals, etc. Leave it in it's beautiful natural milky white state (or our new solid colored tubing options!) and you may choose to get it sanded for body grip purposes. Or add a strip of grip tape for that no-slip body grip option! Or you still like taped hoops? Then add more than a slither of tape... the options are plenty with this tubing... HDPE is my FAVORITE! This tubing also comes in 3 different sizes as follows-
. . .
7/8 Beginner HDPE- Faster than a PE hoop, but still slow enough for further learning of on-the-body moves. You may also choose to skip all PE hoops and use this hoop as your first beginner hoop if you like a bit of a challenge. Get it taped with some grip tape if you choose this as your first hoop.
This tubing is stiff, so choose a hoop diameter size no less than 36" and no larger than 40".
Tubing size is 7/8" O.D., 3/4" I.D., 105 PSI and weighs approx. 11oz.
. . .
3/4 Intermediate HDPE- A great intermediate HDPE hoop... this is my favorite size tubing in HDPE. Great for on AND off-body hooping.
Choose a hoop diameter size no less than 30" and no larger than 36".
Tubing size is 3/4" O.D., 5/8" I.D., 120 PSI and weighs approx. 8-10oz.
. . .
5/8 Pro HDPE- Very light and thin tubing. Great for fast moves, advanced hoopers, and more off-body movements!
Choose a hoop diameter size no larger than 32" or the hoop becomes too floppy.
Tubing size is 5/8" O.D., 1/2" I.D., 150 PSI and weighs approx. 6oz.
. . .
Once you've mastered all 3 stages of HDPE hoops, the next step up in tubing is PolyPro tubing, also known as Poly, PP tubing, PPE tubing, or clear tubing. This tubing is our lightest weight tubing. It feels thin and very light and will spin much faster than any other hoop. Perfect for advanced hooping and tons of off-body tricks. Polypro is great for breaks and reversals because the tubing is very flexible and responsive and will feel as if it is bouncing off of you. You may find PolyPro in a natural clear color and now also in a variety of colors including metallics, UV reactive, brights, and pastels.
You may choose to get it sanded for body grip purposes. Or add a strip of grip tape for that no-slip body grip option! This tubing also comes in 3 different sizes as follows-
. . .
3/4"- A faster hoop and a great step-up from HDPE. The "classic size"
Choose a hoop diameter between 30" and 38".
Tubing size weighs approx. 8-10oz.
. . .
5/8"- Thin, hard, bouncy, and bendy! Coils down really well for travel.
Choose a hoop diameter of 34" or less.
Tubing weighs approx. 6-8oz.
. . .
1/2"- Very thin, as thin as your pinky. Great for off-body or as 2 mini hoops.
Choose a hoop diameter size no larger than 30" or the hoop becomes too floppy.
Tubing weighs approx. 5-6oz.
